South Miami / Coral Gables 1676
On Veterans Day, South Miami/Coral Gables Elks Lodge #1676 members Frank Sullivan, Esquire; Jeff Silver, Trustee Chairman; and Rick Del Vecchio, Exalted Ruler, visited over 100 veterans at Miami VA Hospital. The trio delivered toiletries and handmade greeting cards by area elementary school students. They were escorted by Armed Service volunteer Myrna Herrera-Colon. Ms. Colon has been an Armed Service volunteer for over 35 years! Frank Sullivan started asking each veteran how they were being treated. They were pleased to hear that all but one stated they were extremely happy with the care they received. Just about everyone said the doctors, nurses and volunteer staff were all very caring and the treatment received was first-class! It was great to be able to bring a little joy to these fine men and women who sacrifice so much for our freedom.

The South Miami/Coral Gables Lodge ballroom was converted to a basketball court for the Hoop Shoot and it was fun to watch the excitement on the kids’ faces. Three girls were so excited that they came an hour early and practiced their dribbling and practiced shooting from various positions on the court. After the competition there was a barbecue by Frank Sullivan and an awards ceremony moderated by Scott Katz, South Miami Hoop Shoot Director, and Edward Allen, Assistant Hoop Shoot Director. Volunteers for this event were David Cohen, Seth Troner, Anne Katz, and Harvey and Lynn Kauffman. Two of the kids went on to win the district championship in their divisions. Taylor Rebhan took top prize for girls and John Popham took top prize for boys.

Florida Keys Lodge 1872

Florida Keys Elks Lodge #1872 through their Vets on the Water program sponsored 14 combat-wounded veterans for a two-day fishing event. All branches of the service were represented and came from seven states.

The Florida Keys Elks continued to support children. The Soccer Shoot was a tremendous success with 33 players. They will be sending a few to regionals. Their local youth will benefit from their massive annual rummage sale held in October and all the leftover clothing was sent to Haiti through another local drive. Milk and cookies with Santa and Mrs. Claus was held in early December. The kids decorated cookies and Christmas ornaments and had pictures and lunch with Santa.
