Jessica was 10 months old when FECTS therapy was initiated. She was born at 27 weeks gestation weighing 2.2 lbs. Jessica was addicted to cocaine with diagnoses of ventricular septal defect, VP shunt, anemia, periventricular leukomalacia, hydrocephalus, and bilateral retinopathy. Jessica lives with her grandmother, who had been told that Jessica would never walk, talk or develop mentally beyond a 2 year old. Jessica is a happy, yet strong willed child. She was content to play with any toy that was close by, using the least amount of movement to obtain other toys. Jessica refused to lie on her stomach and required physical assistance to maintain a crawling position. She was a tiny, yet mighty little girl that knew what she liked and didn't like!
Jessica's Long Term Developmental Goals:
1. Weight bear on her forearms and hands in prone
2. Develop sitting balance to floor and sit independently for 10 minutes
3. Improve muscle strength for mobility skills
4. Improve fine motor skills for manipulation of objects/toys
Jessica made miraculous progress in therapy. She mastered all of her goals with a lot of coaxing to initiate challenging activities, incorporating play into each task and with consistent carryover of her Home Exercise Program. Jessica now walks, runs, climbs and jumps independently. She overcame the obstacles of her early birth & now goes to public school with minimal ESE assistance for speech articulation.
This job is amazing!
I meet families like Jessica's and establish a relationship to improving her independence. Having the ability to work in the child's home greatly increases the progress and carryover of exercises/activities. It's so rewarding for me to watch a child flourish and overcome obstacles that hindered their ability to be independent, but the "smiles" are the BEST!! Being a part of the Best People On Earth is a dream come true!!
