Jacksonville Lodge #221
District Reporter: Phyllis Bonser news@opelks.comcastbiz.net

Headline: Jacksonville Elks Lodge Reaches 125th Anniversary Milestone

Jacksonville Elks Lodge #221 held a 125th Anniversary Celebration on December 10, 2016. The Lodge is one of the six founding lodges of the Florida State Elks Association and is considered the “Mother Lodge” of Florida. In attendance, were many elected officials including City Councilman and Lodge member Scott Wilson, PER; North East District DD Paul Orvosh; North East District VP Glen Gardner; Past State President Jim Hurst; and Past Grand Exalted Ruler/National President, Val Bates. Lodge member and mural artist, Bob Morgan, created a detailed indoor mural depicting the history of the Lodge. The JSO Color Guard along with help from a local Boy Scout Troop opened the ceremony.

Presentations were made by various groups who regularly use the Lodge to host their meetings. Among those groups were Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1046 and Jacksonville Semper Fidelis Society. Exhibits for the Florida Elks Children Therapy Services, drug awareness and Veterans activities were widely visited during the celebration. Entertainment was provided by the Fascinating Rhythm Orchestra, a 15 piece orchestra that rehearses and practices at the Lodge.

PHOTOGRAPHS APPROPRIATE FOR PUBLICATION IN THE ELKS MAGAZINE

The Elks Magazine likes to print your photographs, especially human interest photos. However, it is very important that we receive photographs of relevant subject matter and of good quality. Please do remember that decisions on photographs are made month to month and that we cannot always publish as many photos as we’d like due to space constraints.

Desired Subject Matter Depictions of Service Projects in Action ... NOT Groups Posing for the Camera Depictions of Donated Money at Work ... NEVER Check Presentations ….Photos should always depict people, but... NOT more than 10 persons, NOT of only one. No oversized enlarged check presentations.

Keep in Mind:

Photos of ACCEPTABLE QUALITY are in focus, well lit (be sure they are not dark), well composed, and not grainy. Many photos are unusable simply because they will look bad when reproduced. Note: Polaroids, pre‑screened photographs, and negatives cannot be used. References to ALCOHOL USE in a photo or a news item are NEVER acceptable. Photos of VETERANS activities must depict the veterans being served or it will not be accepted. Photos of DRUG AWARENESS activities must depict the youths involved or it will not be accepted. Photos should be PACKAGED PROPERLY: all individuals should be clearly identified (from left to right) with names properly spelled, there should be no writing on the back (or else it is unusable), it should be protected in cardboard, and it should not be stapled or bound with paper clips.

Copy Deadlines for the Florida Elks News Magazine

Copy to Editor (FIRM)  Printing Date Mailing Date
June 25 July 25 August 1
Sept. 25 Oct. 21 Oct. 28
Dec. 18 Jan. 15 Jan 20
March 25 April 28 May 5

The above deadline dates will enable the FSEA to mail the Florida Elks News two weeks prior to the Quarterly Meetings, Midyear and Annual Conventions.

Although these are the published deadlines, all effort should be made to have your lodge send articles to your District Reporter and to the FSEA within two weeks of the event as opposed to waiting until the end of the quarter. By doing so, we can showcase an event on the FSEA Facebook page and the Florida Elks News Online (FENO) edition for those members who appreciate their news sooner. Please note that articles received after the Copy to Editor deadline dates run the risk of not being published.

Newly revised Article and Photo Submission Guidelines can be found on the menu links

Thank you in advance for your timely submissions!
